OH-Sen 20: Stewart Back Off Of Debate Agreement

August 22, 2008 by buckeyestateblog

800px-Rooster_crowing Republican Jimmy Stewart (pictured right) has backed off from an agreement he made with his opponent in the race for the 20th senate district, Rick Shriver, to hold a series of debates.

The reason for his reversal? He wants Green Party candidate Tim Kettler to participate in the debates.

Ya, like people aren’t going to see through that…

“Jimmy Stewart’s flip-flop shows that he is afraid to stand up and defend his votes for a higher gas tax and the largest tax increase in the history of Ohio. If he was so concerned about including minor third party candidates in these debates, then he should have thought of that before he accepted the challenge.

“These debates are too important to blow off. Jimmy Stewart needs to stop running from his record and agree to legitimate debates that will allow the voters to see what the real choices are.”

-- Rick Shriver

OH Sen-20: Shriver Challenges Stewart To Debates

August 18, 2008 by buckeyestateblog

Rick Shriver, the Democrat running to replace Joy Padgett in the state senate, has challenged his Republican opponent Jimmy Stewart to a series of debates.

Dear Representative Stewart:

I write today to insist you join me in candidate debates throughout Ohio’s 20th State Senate District.  As we both continue our campaigns, it is imperative that voters throughout the district have an immediate opportunity to hear from us and ask difficult questions.

I believe that these debates will offer an important opportunity for the voters of this region to ask important questions of both of us.  It is important for the political process that we both have an opportunity to discuss our differing records on taxes and other significant policies.

I propose a series of debates held across the district, one in each of the nine counties we are running to represent.  These debates would be open to the media and interested citizens, allowing us to put all of the issues on the table for discussion.  I suggest the following dates and locations:

•           Monday, August 25th – Coshocton

•           Wednesday, August 27th – Cambridge

•           Friday, August 29th – Zanesville

OH Sen-24: Rosemary Palmer Announces Candidacy

June 18, 2008 by Ohio Daily Blog

Ohio Daily Blog's picture

Today 10th Congressional District primary candidate and long-time anti-Iraq War activist Rosemary Palmer (D-Bay Village) laid claim to the open spot on the ballot in the 24th Ohio Senate District, replacing Emmanuel Cotronakis (D-Bay Village) and taking on State Rep. Tom Patton (R-Strongsville), and asked for support in getting her campaign rolling. Because of her congressional campaign she has a head start on putting together a field organization, but she needs donations and volunteers. Here are excerpts from her announcement:

I agreed to run for this office because I feel I can bring so much to the table in this important election year. To the Senate, I bring my experience as a journalist covering the state legislature as co-founder of Capitol News Service. I bring my experience as an educator at both the college and preparatory levels. Most importantly, I bring my experience as a woman and mother to a representative body which claims only five women out of 33 members.

As a candidate, and the mother of a Marine killed in Iraq, I believe I give the Democratic Party added credibility on issues of veterans affairs at a time when so many of our brave soldiers are returning with broken bones, shattered spirits, and without the support they deserve from employers and their state government.

My mission, from the time of my son's untimely death to today, has been to help others reclaim the hope we've lost both nationally and locally. Few places have been challenged as hard over recent years as our state and region. Jobs are moving away, taxes are climbing, and it's harder and harder to make ends meet. I know that with the right leadership in our state legislature, we can make it easier for new companies and new families to plant roots here that will grow for generations. ...

Today, I ask for your support of my campaign.

The days are few and the road ahead is long. We enter this race with only four and a half months to go. It is a challenging task, but one we will no doubt rise to face. Others have joined me in this effort, including the Senate Democratic Caucus, and the Ohio Federation of Teachers who last week gave me their endorsement.

Please help me make up for the late start by committing "24 for the 24th" - either as a recurring monthly contribution of $24, or by committing 24 volunteer hours from today to November.

I know you've been there for me in the past. I appreciate that support more than you know. I hope you can help me in this effort as well. It is a fight worth taking, and I am up to the challenge.

Although the GOP is defending a fairly large number of seats in the Ohio Senate this cycle (thirteen), there are only a few races that are competitive, and this has the potential to become one of them. Palmer now has some campaign experience, name recognition, and a cadre of supporters, and this is an open seat in a district where the partisan voter index is fairly close (R+4).

Looking around at the other race, the ones I deem to be competitive at this point are OH Sen-10, where long-time county commissioner Roger Tackett (D-South Charleston) is campaigning hard against State Rep. Chris Widener (R-Springfield) for an open seat in a moderately GOP-leaning district (R+5), and OH Sen-20 where county commissioner Rick Shriver (D) opposes State Rep. Jimmy Stewart (R-Athens) for the seat of bankrupt OH-18 loser State Sen. Joy Padgett (R-Coshocton), in a district that is nearly balanced (R+2).
