Update II: GOP Scuttles Bailout Talks as Disbelieving Dems and Bush Keep Pressure on

Update: Dems Have Enough Votes for Bailout Measure to Pass

Rep. Barney Frank told a group of reporters outside the House chamber, "It's the longest Hail Mary pass in the history of either football or Marys," reacting to John McCain's announcement that he is suspending his campaign and calling for a postponement of Friday's debate to participate in negotiations on the bail-out bill.

Bob Cesca says, "Expecting a workable solution to this economic meltdown from a man as knee-jerk, dishonest and incomprehensible as John McCain would be an exercise in national self-destruction."

Even the GOP line that this shows-McCain's-a-maverick, committed-to-solving-problems-as-a-great-leader must be drawing smiles among GOP politicos not enamored of the old bastard.

Who gets to tell McCain, 'thanks, but no thanks'?

On A Way Forward, Or, Practical "Subprime Crisis" Solutions

Uppity Wisconsin's picture

AUTHOR'S NOTE: This was originally published on February 14th of this year, but it seems to be exceptionally timely today.

We had a lively discussion last week regarding the causes and possible future of the “subprime crisis” that is on everyone’s lips these days.

Having examined the sources of the problem, and noting the lack of holistic thinking about how things might be resolved, I’ve taken it upon myself to come forward with an idea that can actually get at the root causes of today’s difficulties...and do it in a way that offers a potential “win-win-win” outcome for homeowners, investors—and the taxpayer.

Paying attention, Presidential candidates?

Good—because time is short, and we need to get to work.

For today’s solution to make sense, we, like Sherman and Peabody, need to make use of the “WABAC Machine”. We’ll set the time dial to the late 1980s, and we’ll set the location as the headquarters of the Resolution Trust Corporation.

PageOneQ: Michelle Obama appears alongside Frank, Baldwin at LGBT DNCC event

BlueGrassRoots's picture

During the convention, I had the pleasure of meeting Nick Langewis of Front Page Q. Here is some of his coverage:

After speaking in front of a crowd on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention, Michelle Obama, wife of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee and Illinois Senator Barack Obama, appeared in front of an audience of over 600 at an LGBT caucus meeting, including delegates and members of the media alongside Reps. Barney Frank (D-MA) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), at a delegate luncheon Tuesday.

"I am honored and thrilled," Obama opened to applause. "I could stay here all afternoon."

"I'm particularly glad to be here on a week that commemorates some of the great strides our nation has made towards equality and justice," she said. "It's been five years since Lawrence v. Texas and 39 years since Stonewall, but still, we've got work to do before we achieve equality in the LGBT community. And although we know that we've got a lot of work to do, this week we're going to celebrate how far we've come, and how deep our shared capacity is to break through any barriers that stand in our way to the progress of this nation."

House Blend for the House Blend, Pam interviewed by everybody, Autumn gets a scoop

PamsHouseBlend's picture

Day three of the Democratic National Convention began with Autumn and Pam joining me and my sister* Karri for breakfast at a restaurant down the block from the Big Tent. We were quite impressed with the coffee...

Pam and House Blend House Blend

We left Pam at the Big Tent, for she had to give her presentation on being a straight ally.  Autumn had a number of transgender activists she wanted to interview and I hustled along to be her videographer.  It was a little weird that of all the panels a scheduling conflict would keep me away from, it was the one on being a straight ally.

The event Autumn and I attended was the LGBT Caucus.  San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom took the podium just literally minutes after learning of the death of Del Martin.  He was visibly shaken and took a couple of minutes to compose himself.  The room fell silent, but as Mayor Newsom spoke, he expressed the feeling of many that it was a blessing that Del was able to finally marry her partner of 5+ decades.
