SEWRPC Hit With Second Civil Rights Complaint

First there was complaint number one - - keyed to transportation spending.

Now there's a second about hiring, and more - - and both allege discriminatory action and federal violations by SEWRPC, the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission.

SEWRPC was the subject last month of a civil rights complaint alleging discriminatory support for suburban highway spending over transit that serves low-income taxpayers.

The complaint, filed in August with federal transportation officials, also cited a lack of minority representatives on SEWRPC's key advisory committees. (In 2007, SEWRPC data showed that of 126 members on its advisory committees at that time, three, or 2%, were minorities.)

Details of that complaint are here. It also seeks an investigation and remedies.

SEWRPC recently said the August complaint had no merit.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin, which filed the August complaint, has now filed a second complaint - - this time with federal labor and contracting officials.

Obama Does Not Support "Reparations" for Black Americans

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. speaks, Friday, Aug. 1, 2008, during a town hall meeting in St. Petersburg, Fla. (AP Photo/Mike Carlson) Well, it looks like Barack Obama is joining the other Negro Leaders and does not support reparations for black folks. According to Christopher Wills at the The Huffington Post, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama opposes offering reparations to the descendants of slaves, putting him at odds with some black groups and leaders.

AAPP: I'm really disappointed with his position on this. "Obama 'does not get it' on this issue." Yes, Black Americans like all Americans deserve good schools and jobs for people who are unemployed. That has nothing to do with reparations, that has to do with being an American. It seems that Barack has it twisted, the U.S. government should combat the legacy of slavery by improving schools, health care and the economy for all, but it should also provide reparations above and beyond what it should do for "all Americans."

Uppity Wisconsin's picture

And sometimes it’s hard to believe my own eyes:

Jim Sensenbrenner goes off on entitlement programs in The Journal Sentinel:

It is time for Democrats controlling the agenda in Congress seriously to debate the crushing costs of entitlement programs and start implementing real reforms.

Gee, weren’t the Republicans in control of the House from 1995-06? And didn’t they control both houses of Congress and the White House 2003-06? Or did the sky just start falling since the Dems took over?

The JS again:

Audit finds bus system in decline

With a veto override attempt coming up next week on a sales tax referendum, a recent state audit is echoing calls to boost funding for the Milwaukee County Transit System.

The independent audit, required by state law, depicts the bus system as a cost-effective operation with declining service.
