Waukesha Water Plan Includes Discharge To Menomonee River Via Underwood Creek

The City of Waukesha revealed a key element in its plan to divert drinking water from Lake Michigan - - discharging its treated wastewater back to the lake by sending it down Underwood Creek in Wauwatosa.

From there, the wastewater will flow into the Menomonee River and into the lake, and while the Great Lakes Compact requires that diverted water be returned, it is not clear whether Waukesha's preference for Lake Michigan water as its long-term supply solution is superior to finding additional underground supplies in Waukesha County's clean, shallow aquifers.

That will be up to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources; the other Great Lakes states would have to agree to the Waukesha diversion plan, and one element of the Waukesha proposal is sure to raise objections in the other states: Waukesha's belief that it can discharge a portion of the diverted water after treatment into the Fox River, which flows into the Mississippi River, not towards Lake Michigan, if the return flow might cause flooding.

The Great Lakes Compact is an eight-state regional agreement designed to establish uniform procedures and standards.

It does not allow for a partial return of diverted water. The Compact requires a return of all water, minus a reasonable portion that is consumed.

Dreams of Obama in Kentucky

BlueGrassRoots's picture
One Democratic Congressional challenger in Kentucky is a proud, full-throated supporter of Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi, despite running against an intrenched incumbent in a deeply conservative district.

Another "Democratic" Congressional challenger in Kentucky is a misogynistic, mouth-breathing racist who refuses to even recognize the name of his own party's nominee for president and reacts to an offer of support from the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives with an
insulting refusal
to vote for her as Speaker, despite running for an open seat against a lesser-known opponent.

Guess which one the Kentucky Democratic Party is supporting.

To his credit, Governor Steve Beshear has sincerely requested Barack Obama campaign in Kentucky, despite antediluvian protest grunts from lizard-brains afraid to campaign as Real Democrats.

Cranky media lands in St. Paul

We've long expected the media arriving in St. Paul to be tired and grumpy, and we were right:
D.C.-based Hearst News Service reporter Jennifer Dlouhy was standing on the 8th floor of the Mill City Museum at a pre-convention media party last night, overlooking the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis. She said that compared to Denver, where the Democrats just wrapped up their convention, "It’s far better food, a far more beautiful backdrop."

"But,” she said of the reporters, “they’re not having as much fun. Maybe they’re just tired.”
...
This week's challenge for reporters, assuming the convention even goes ahead, will be warding off convention fatigue.

“This is like running a marathon and being told you have another 20 miles to go, but at least this 20 miles is indoors,” said New York 1 News political director Robert Hardt, who, like many others here already, flew into town straight from Denver. He was referring to the last-night move in Denver from the intimate Pepsi Center to the outdoor Invesco Field.
